What Is Post-Modernism?
A lot of people in this world get confused by the meaning of post-modernism. It has turned into a term that is just thrown around in conversations, but a lot of people also use it in a sense of meaning something that is innovative or new. It all started from architectural purposes in the 1960s and then developed and became more well known in the 70s and 80s. By the 90s, it was a very prominent force, and has become a term that many philosophers, artists, filmographers and architects use in day to day life.
Post-modernism originally comes from modernism. The prefix post defines something that comes afterwards. For example, "post dinner I had a drink" would mean, "after dinner I had a drink". Post-modernism is a term used to describe the things that come after a modernistic thought, or something that develops from one.
Before we begin to learn more about post-modernism, we need to know more about modernism.
Modernism is from the western cultural and artistic period in history (the 19th and 20th centuries). It is a very vague term that describes the change in the westernised world of this period. After the war, discoveries in science, arts and other things that affected the world, modernism became a theory for many scientists such as Freud, Jung and many more. Modernism was thought by many philosophers to be restricted and a feature of the past, therefore, post-modernism was created to expand this view.
The main thing you have to remember when having a post-modernism point of view, is that the world becomes a much more complicated and indefinite place to live. Post-modernism is where the world is only an opinion, a point of view, and not a whole truth. For many people, this isn't a comfortable point of view. It is a point of view that tries to see beyond the restraints of the past.
In addition to this, post-modernism is something that takes ideas from the old, and re-creates them in the new. A good example of this would be 'Lady GaGa' and 'Beyonce's Telephone music' video. In this video, they take several ideas that have been used in the past, and turned them into a new version of their own. For example, Beyonce and GaGa drive their car off into the distance at the end, this is a reference to the ending of the well known, old, classic film Thelma and Louise. Another feature of post-modernism in this text is where the two artists are seen holding down the cafe. This is a reference to the famous "Pulp Fiction" movie when at the beginning; two characters are seen doing the exact same thing.
Another good example would be in the movie "Wayne's World" where the main characters are seen dancing to "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the car. This has become a famous scene for its parody on the song written by Queen in the 1970s.
Post-modernism does not accept boundaries such as art boundaries, including bricolage and pastiche forms. However, something that post-modernism DOES accept is the fragmentation of human life forms. This is completely the opposite to modernism, as modernism sees this fragmentation as a negative thing, where as, post-modernism celebrates this pointless view on the world we live in.
Overall, post-modernism is just a thought that expresses adventure within your life experience. It questions every aspect of the world and people's views and opinions to create a new truth. It questions all theories, scientists, and philosophers and comes up with its own conclusion. All in all, post-modernism is a way of finding new truths in the world.
